Noche Buena...Cuban style

COUNTDOWN...

I can't wait, only 1 day left for Noche Buena.

WEPA!



On December 24th, Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) family members gather together and have a GRAND feast. My family is pretty big, there is always an over-abundance of food...sometimes even excessive!
Noche Buena means good night....and for us Cubanos, this special noche is all about familia, food, friends and fun; it's a time to celebrate life with great comida, LOUD-ass music, and plenty of love. It is truly the most beautiful and heart-warming celebration of the entire year....

The roast pig -- el lechon asado is always the main attraction. Along with the pig, we have black beans, white rice, yuca con mojo (mojo is a type of marinade with garlic, onions, and sour oranges), tostones, salad and of course lots and I mean LOTS of Cuban bread.

The table is beautifully set, all the wonderful dishes are laid out. The family sits down to a meal prepared with love and tenderness.

Yummy desserts include orange and grapefruit shells in a heavy syrup, bunuelos -- a fried sweet dough with powdered sugar and syrup, natilla, flan, arroz con leche.

In addition to all the goodies prepared, there are always Spanish turrones [a nougat candy that comes in a large bar], cheeses, nuts and lots of wine, beer, sidra [Spanish cider], Mojitos, Cuba Libre [rum and coke].

Every Navidad was incredible when my mami and my grandparents were still here with us. I cherish each and every Christmas and I know that this coming Noche Buena, as I’m running around getting stuff set up, helping my dad keep coals on the lechon, wrapping last minute Christmas gifts, cutting los turrones, making the Mojitos, they’ll be there with us. Dancing and smiling at the beautiful family they created.
