I tell you, if Wimpy, remember him, the hamburger eating dude from Popeye were around, he would be partying with us this evening. We are going to be feasting tonight on 'fritas'...what are fritas you may ask, well its a Cuban version of a hamburger that is very well seasoned with delicious spices and tastes like a lil bit of HEAVEN!!!
As a young chica growing up in NYC, my mom would make her delicious fritas and they would be devoured in a matter of minutes...we thought fast food burgers were a joke, it couldn't ever compare to her mix of paprika, garlic, onions, bread crumbs added to that--her love.
 Mom would serve her fritas on a platter, neatly stacked -- but the piece of resistance were the crispy shoestring potatoes that are placed underneath the top bun --- YUMMMY. The taste of the well seasoned beef, onions, ketchup, topped off with the papitas fritas were finger lickin good! We would kid around with mom and tell her to open up a frita stand on the corner of 18th and 9th Avenue, she would shake her head and say, 'no jodan' which translates 'quit fuckin with me' and laugh..yeah mom had a potty mouth, much like me! LMAO
In honor of mom this year, Nuria, Mayra and I decided to revere her on New Year's Eve with a 'frita' party. Everything that we will be doing tonight will be with the memory of mom in mind. We will be sitting down at midnight watching the ball drop in Times Square, and throwing down our 12 grapes before the stroke of midnight, just like we use to when we were little chicas.
 I went out and bought a couple of the things that mom loved. For example, her favorite drink, mom simply loved Malta. Malta is a carbonated malt beverage, its brewed much like beer, but its non-alcoholic. Mom use to make a delicious mix in the blender of Malta and evaporated milk that all of us would go crazy over....and YES it's quite high calorie, but dayum its was good.
Talk to you guys next year....don't forget your 12 grapes tonight!
